Hedy Attouch Laboratoire ACSIOM Université Montpellier II A One Perturbation Variational Principle and Applications Jonathan Borwein CECM Simon Fraser University BC, V5A 1S6 In a typical variational principle, one is given a fixed real-valued function f (usually at least lower semicontinuous) defined on a Banach (or on a complete metric) space X, along with a class P of functions on X which serves as a source perturbations for f . We find conditions under which there is at least one perturbation g in P such that the perturbed function f + g attains its minimum or is well-posed. We then apply these results to convex functions and show, in particular, that the product of a separable space and a Gateaux differentiability space (GDS) is again a GDS.
